MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Miami Police made sure local homeless children had something to celebrate this holiday season.

A group of City of Miami Police officers took a group of kids from a youth shelter Christmas shopping.

“These kids at the Miami bridge are often forgotten. They are often left out so I want to make sure we do something for them so we did a mini shop with a cop,” said City of Miami Police Major Delrish Moss.

The kids -ages 14 to 17-years old – each got a $100 gift card to pick out whatever they wanted from a Target store in Midtown.

“It makes me feel good, like somebody loves me,” said Shonteria Boyd.

“It’s very nice of the police officers to spend time with us,” said Richard Jackson Jr.

As they went up and down the isles trying to decide what they’d take home, the kids savored the moment forgetting about their difficulties if only for a short time.

“We don’t worry about our past.  We worry about what’s in our future, in store for us,” Jackson Jr.

“This is something to say to them, ‘You know what?  No matter what society’s given you. No matter what life has given you, we think you’re special and we want to make sure that you have a merry Christmas,” said Moss.
